The ignition switch on my 1997 Lincoln Continental is very hard to turn on, specially since I have sporadic arthritis in my right hand. Is there some way to "loosen" the switch, etc ?

No, But a good lube with wd40 or white lithium grease will ease it plus there are gadgets available for assisted twisting of keys available on the net , try this website :

at just $6.95 it is worth it - get a few so that you can use them in your doors at home too!!

Good luck

How can I disable the door chime which is triggered every time I open the Drivers door of of my 1996 Lincoln Continental?

Its sensing that there is a key in the ignition. You have to replace the switch in the ignition cylinder that senses a key is inserted. Or alternatively access a wiring diagram and cut the wire from the key sensor to eliminate it.

How to install ignition switch on 1996 lincoln continental

Most fords you turn the key to the on position and on the bottom of the steering column there should be a hole in the plastic take a screw driver stick it in the hole there's a little ball bearing in the ignition switch push it in and pull the ignition out at the same time. Also make sure your key doesn't have chip in it if it does you will need the key reprogrammed or have the new switch made to the old key if it has a regular key don't worry about the programming the car will not start if not programmed it will turn over but won't start theft light will flash

I think your only solution is going to be through the dealer, no one else will have this. Ask for a regional
factory tech rep, they will have some solution, even if it comes to a new lock cylinder and ignition switch.
