I had the same problem. The transmission would not upshift into 3rd or 4th and 2nd seemed to rev on forever. I replaced the ignition and coil wires as well as the distributor cap and rotor and that fixed the problem. There was obviously some defect in the wires and/or cap/rotor. Although i am not a mechanic, I would say that since the transmission is electronically controlled, due to the defect in the above parts, the voltages going to the cylinders and thus the rev voltage limit load was not being reached or seen by the computer and so was not allowing the upshift. Since this was an ignition problem, I would check the coil as well.

It's in limp home mode. You'll have to check wire connections and electronic controls. If it has a vacuum modulator you can remove it and look for trans fluid on the vacuum hose side (meaning ruptured diaphram). Double check the parts you replaced as well, especially if they were used parts. My dad went through three speed sensors in one year on his Caravan. You should drop the pan after checking other components. It could be a bad relay, shorted module or wire. The three speed transmissions are much more reliable than the four speed overdrive transmissions but with age and miles things can go wrong and parts will wear out.

It may be the torque converter clutch circuit. Do you have a check engine light on?

You need to have it checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible, I drive a 2000 cadillac catera and it began to have the same problems about 4 months ago but last month my sport mode button began to blink which means a transmission problem. So when i had it looked at they said my 3rd gear was almost completely burnt out and it cost $2,000 to fix. The cause was a broken piece of the transmission was failing and it had to be completely rebuilt. Good luck!!
For
car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be
transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

The
shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has
to be open and realign.
There
are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and
suddenly this occurred then its shifter
assembly alignment issue.
