Problem electronic system
have the fault codes read and look for TCM or wiring fault

    Electronic system?? It tries to pull off in drive but it only does that when overdrive is off, when car is in drive it doesn't move anywhere. I was thinking transmission problems not electrical problems. Was told car was too old to hook up to get a code but the engine light is on.

  • Bill Boyd Mar 28, 2017

    it is an electronic problem as the transmission doesn't know what ratio to select
    units that control that are the TCM, TRS and the VSS
    it has a code if it has an engine light
    you were told that because the mechanic was not trained enough to be able to read the flashing light code
    there is a point where you attach a special light pen and they you read the "morse code flashes"this is the old OBD-1 system used around 1988 models
    take it to an accredited specialist transmission shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

    Thank you Mr. Boyd, im taking your advice very seriously and will take it to a reputable mechanic. But for my knowledge, what does the codes TCM, TRS, AND VSS mean.

  • Bill Boyd Apr 02, 2017

    TCM= transmission control module
    controls when the ratios will change and what servos/ solenoids to activate
    TRS= transmission range service
    reports to the TCM as to the correct ratio in use
    VSS= vehicle speed sensor
    reports to the tcm as to vehicle speed, runs the speedo readings on the dash, controls the cruise control function

    can it be reset and if so how

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2017

    You were right on the money when you said mechanical issue. Had test done and it showed up as a VSS. Thank you again so much for your help in finding this as a possible issue. The sensor costs around $100.00 and I could have spent thousands listening to other mechanics. She'll be back on the road soon thanks to you...

    Hi, the speed sensor was replaced with a new one and the car tries to pull in drive but it seems like its trying real hard to pull off but it doesn't. Put the scanner back on it and it says it can't connect the the car and reads no codes. Is there something that i missed along the way. Thanks

Transmission problems

It could be a sign of bad transmission solenoid. If so, your vehicle has trouble shifting into drive or reverse. Normally, when you start your car, you're able to shift into drive or reverse right away. With a bad transmission solenoid, the vehicle could have a delay of a few seconds, or even take several minutes to warm up and operate properly. During this delay, the vehicle will act similar to how it behaves in neutral. It won't stay in park, and when you press the gas pedal, the vehicle will make an engine revving noise but not move.

We have a 1999 Toyota Avalon with a problem with the driver's electric seat mechanism. It will move in every position except it will not go back (reverse). Any ideas on how we can fix? Thanks.

This is a switch problem for sure. Try to toggle the switch back and forth very hard and mutiple times. If it moves the you are 100% in need of a switch. The switch is farley easy to replace. Dont buy from dealer. Have a junk yard pull one for you
