It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.

HAS TWO KNOCK SENSORS they are both under intake in valley of engine. remove intake and will see two black grommets they are under those best to replace both at same time

It is located on the front of the transmission. you will see 2 of them one on the left under small transmission lines it is the input then to the right behind the radiator overflow there is the other one. Easiest way to change them is with a 1" deep well socket

V6 3.3L The sensor is located underneath the air intake manifold on top
of the engine block. This should take an experienced mechanic about 3-4
hours to replace.

To install:
Fuel pump
Fuel level sender. Tighten the screws to 17-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.5 Nm).
Fuel tank. Tighten the bolts to 27-36 ft. lbs. (37-49 Nm).
Fuel tank skid plate. Tighten the bolts to 27-36 ft. lbs. (37-49 Nm).
