balance on tail shaft was what? it sounds like the drive shaft and universal joints yokes were not scribe marked to be put in the same place causing the drive shaft to be unbalanced there are weights on the drive shaft EX. little metal bars welded to it try taking it out and rotating the shaft a bolt hole at a time or a universal joint cap + at a time to see if it helps also the universal joint could not be seated properly causing intense vibration at take off please respond and be much more specific so I can possibly help you figure it out with out actually seeing the truck LATER MAN!
harmonic vibrations at speed normally come from out of balanced drive shafts or drive angles of the drive shafts not set correctly. IT can be from worn slip joints and dry u-joints. Have a engineering shop that specialises in tail shaft manufacturer to check it out as they will have the gear to check all the items.
have you checked the engine mounts, weak engine mounts can make it vibrate, if you could tell me more were the vibration is sounding like its coming from front or back it may help more to find the problem. also have you had the balance weight checked on the drive shaft. this can cause a problem like this. if you have a ring on the drive shaft there is a ring, then it is missing. and that is why you are geting this fault. you will need to have a new one fitted.
No, there should be no springs or anything like that. Just unbolt it to remove, but first match mark everything up to go back in the exact same position. as best as you can get it. Sometimes the drive shafts are "fine tuned" for balance at the factory as a last step during assembly. But you need to take it off and rotate it around. If that was what was clicking, the looseness in the joint should be very apparent.
when you say humming as if out of balance you may have ansqwered your own question. Tail shaft vibration comes in aroun 30 mph and the points I would look for are loose uni joints or a lost balance weight from the tail shaft. To check uni joints look for rust streaks from cross. The next step is to grab firmly either side of the joint and see if there is any movement while twisting you hands in opposite directions. next lift one half of the cross and check for movement in the bearings repeat this at all uni joints check the tail shaft slip joint by trying to twist each half and check for up and down movement at this spline. front shafts fail more readily than rear ones
There are many things that can induce a vibration in the truck, but it seems that most of the common vibration problems are centered in two areas, balance and wheel/tire defects.
first thing to do is get the wheels balanced and see if that helps.sometimes if the wheels arent balanced correctly it can send a vibration up the shaft.if problem persists then get new driveshafts
check to see if the harmonic balancer has slipped if it looks good my next question would be have any of the u-joints been replaced and if they have there may be a balance problem there also greasing u-joints might effect it. Let me know. dc
the belt you mean timing belt if so you got 2 belt one the t-belt that syncronize top to bottom and the outher balancer shaft belt if you have less power or engine noise the t-belt is not at the right place and engine vibration balancer shaft belt not at the right place one way or the other you have to open everything again and put the belt in there exact position cheers pierre
