Probably in the early stage of a head gasket problem, Subarus run great even with blown head gaskets, every once in a while the temperature guage will spike and blow coolant out of the overflow bottle, you may be able to detect exhaust gases in the cooling system by taking a whiff of the radiator or overflow bottle.

SOURCE: temp gauge goes up to hot then back down, up and down...

That is very possible.Your radiator could also be plugged,You water pump could be could be giving out or the head gaskets are bad..Those are all worse case scenario's But yes the thermostat could be the problem..I'd start with that then make sure your clutch is working properly..Hope this helps you and have a great day

Brown gunk is either oil from a blown head gasket or 'stop-leak'. The head gasket is expensive to fix.

If you have over 150,000 miles probably cheaper to replace the car if the head gasket is bad.

How to bleed cooling system 2000 Mazda mpv es 2.5l 24v. That hasn't. Got a petcock or cap on radiator. After installing new waterpump and thermostat?

So the overflow tank would be pressurized with a radiator cap. This would no doubt be higher than top of radiator and engine .Keep filling it without engine running and heater on hot, then start up, when engine gets hot and thermostat opens, water should leave overflow and you need to top up as required.

I have a 2000 sub outback,, it got hot and messed up the heads ,, another engine was placed in the car and now it will run sitting in the driveway for hours and b ok, but when you take it dwn the road it...

hi it could be a few problems but i would start with replacing the thermostat as that is a common cause, its located on the bottom of the engine behind the bottom radiator hose. Second check you dont have a hole in a hose or radiator itself and your electric fans are going. If all that fails the only other thing to casue such a problem would really be the water pump getting worn

My subaru outback is running hot and the heater doesn't blow hot air only cool

Have you checked the coolant level? If it is low, the car will run hot, and coolant won't flow through the heater core, which will result in a no heat situation. If this isn't the problem, let me know, I will try to help further.

Water coming from engine into overflow tank

Sounds like an overheating problem, best to get it checked, maybe thermostat stuck closed, pluged radiator, head gasget, cracked head.
