I hsve a 1987 190d mercedes. The cable for the hood release lever broke at a point I can't reach from the car's interior. What do I need to do to open the hood at this point?
Crawl under the front of your car and by sight or feel find the broken cable and pull on it to open your hood.also it the cable is too short feel if you can find the lever from under the car to release to hood.

Often a long thin screwdriver through the grill will reach the release lever. Get a flashlight and look through the grill and look for any opening in the guard around the cable end. Take the screwdriver and place it against the lever the cable is in and push towards the cable.
I'm able to open the hood two ways: 1) ask someone to hold onto the lever inside the car while you try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood fully.
2) Pull the lever completely open in the car and try to find a thick screwdriver or some thick paper folded up to wedge next to the lever to hold it open while you get out and try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood completely.
Other than this finding a service manual or tutorial online about how to pull out whatever trim or interior covers you would need to replace the cable fully. There should be a specific replacement guide for this item since I'm sure it happens to car's at least semi-regularly
Common, providing the release is actually hooked up, just get someone to tap on the hood when you pull the lever, should pop up, if not the handle and or cable may have broke, then you get to do a little fishing with a hook pick and a screw driver to manually release the cable through the grille,,.
On my 2002 s10 the small clip on the hood latch where the cable end attaches to the lever was broken.I finally drove a 3/4" mop handle and by prying, forced the grill down enough to unbolt the hood latch and after messing with it for a while I was able to reach behind the latch and press on it enough to drop the latch off the pin.Sure hope I don't ever have to do it again.
if there is no cable left to grab onto and pull inside the car you can get to it from under the car it is tough to do and in a tight spot, you have to reach the mechanism and pull it to release
Saturn Vue hood release can be opened (if the cable is not broken) by disconnecting the cable from the back of the release lever, grabbing the ball on the end of the cable with some large pliers ("channel locks") and pulling hard. A metal "wire keeper" bracket clamped to the cable end under the hood to serve as a spacer and the release lever works. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a procedure for opening the hood on the Saturn VUE and ION vehicles should the hood latch release cable mechanism become inoperative. VUE Hood Opening ProcedureModify the Saturn radio antenna by bending the antenna mast 1 in. (2.54 cm) above the antenna base to a 25 degree angle Open hood of similar vehicle to locate hood latch release cable to hood latch attachment point. Using modified antenna, note approximate location that antenna will have to enter in between fascia and hood to access the hood latch cable attachment point. This should be toward the left edge of the Saturn emblem. Also note position of the modified antenna base. It should be angled downward. Note: Use protective tape on the hood and fascia where the antenna will be inserted to protect the surfaces from scratches On vehicle with inoperative latch, insert antenna between hood and fascia and depress the hood latch cable until the hood is opened.
can you reach the cable itself?,or is it broke at the hood latch?IF its not broken at the outside latch, try to follow the cable,un-hook it from the handle and pull on the wire cable to open it.IF its broken at the latch itself, you are going to have to reach the latch through the grille and try to pull the lever the cable connects to.That part is no fun at all..!!
when you pull the hood release lever, you may not hear anything, and the hood won't move, and when you walk to the front, it is still seated, if you can get your fingertips to grap the bottom of the hood (just above the silver trim) you can pull it up..mine does that, it doesn't seem to work, but you have to pull up on it and it kicks up a couple inches and you can reach the lever
