SOURCE: cannot shift into reverse although forward gears all functional
have ur shift linkage bushings replaced....most likely thse are torn or completely broken .. this is common on these models..also on some vw's of the same years
SOURCE: 1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.
What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

It's either your servo, or your bands.
Either way, the tranny needs a good cheap shop repair.
I'd just get a warrantied salvage yard tranny if I were you and save a few hundred bucks.

I had the same problem the only solution was to replace the ignition barrell
SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.
This is Ron out of Vero Beach Florida. I have been doing trannys for years. The problem you described is caused (more than likely) by a seized clutch pack. Depending on the trans, and your car should be RWD with a 700r4 tranny, there are several sets of clutch packs and at least one band. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure to "engage" the correct set of clutch discs, at the right time , to engage and change gears. I have seen in the past, where a customer parks his car for the evening and the next morning, no move. What happened?? More than likely, a clutch pack was on it\'s way out but cause the car was hot the plates were free, but after cooling, they can weld themselves together and actually "lock-up". In the morning you know the end result. Your tip on "moves in Nuetral" is the give away. Ron
