Today the tach runs off the crank sensor. Used to be the distributor. before that, the coil. If your cluster comes and goes. Then you have a electrical problem, like you didn't already know this. First check fuses, pull them out, look at them and replace. This gets rid of corrosion problems. Next I would pull the cluster , then pull the plug and reinsert. Check it before you reassemble everything. Again corrosion. If this doesn't get rid of the problem. Then I would check for power and ground, also check for continuity of the wires. Just a start through, Then I would take apart computers and go threw them...
Clusters are a problem in these cars. Go on line and find someone who can rebuild it. Very low cost to rebuild. Tach and speedo get there signals from different sources so it is more than likely a cluster issue not a sensor.
i have a 2005 monte carlo 3.4 v6 auto with overdrive. i recently replaced the whole cluster because the tach and speedometer was reading crazy.i bought one at a salvage yard installed it and have had no problems for several months.now unfortunatly i am ee=xperiencing the speedometer dropping speed all of a sudden and then it will go to zero and not change at all.the only thing i can think of is the fact that i installed a set of 18 inch wheels and the same day my speedometer started the crazy stuff.so if you have the wrong size tires or wheels i assume that this is the problem.the computer is reading something wrong and the speedometer is responding to this.i hope i have helped you.
COULD BE GROUND PROBLEMS OR THE TACH GOING BAD.EVEN THOUGH CAR SEEMS TO BE RUNNING GOOD IDLING GOOD.SOME TIMES A SPARK PLUG MISFIRE.CAUSING A LITTLE ROUGH IDLING CAUSING TACH NEEDLE TO GO CRAZY.I SEEN ALTERNATOR WITH VOLTAGE REGULATOR GOING BAD CAUSE A POWER SURGE CAUSING HEAD LIGHTS TO DIM A LITTLE THEN BRIGHT WHILE ENGINE IDLING.THIS WILL CAUSE TACH METER NEEDLE BOUNCE AROUND ALSO.
It may have a faulty cluster. Or possibly could have a charging system problem.
Take it to a dealer and have it scanned for codes.
The instument cluster is a module that can store trouble codes. If the cluster is at fault the new one will have to be programmed to the vehicle to work correctly.
Purchase a new keyless remote FOB. The signal from the remote is weak and loses contact with the anti-theft module in the instrument cluster. We have 2 sets of keys and 1 worked while the other caused the instrument cluster needles to jump and jam the gear selector. The problem is not the car's battery, alternator, wiring or instrument cluster.
