I have a 97 Maxima Auto with 130k on it. I hit a small pothole going into my driveway and had to coast to a stop. Now the trans will not engage into any gear. There is some grinding of the gears when you shift into any gear. Also when it is in park or neutral and you rev the engine a bit it makes a zzzzzzzzz (soft grinding) noise like something is not quite engaged. Help!
I looked at it and other than a plastic sheild on the passenger side nothing seems to be out of place. No leaking, no apparent damageI looked at it and other than a plastic sheild on the passenger side nothing seems to be out of place. No leaking, no apparent damage

possible but more likely issue with valve body in trans.is it a 5 speed auto?does it get worse the hotter the trans gets?the mounts are a common failure on these but generally when they fail you get a big thump when you initially hit this gas when pulling away from being stopped.
Yes it sounds like the starter needs a recon.
The brushes can wear
The armiture bushes can wear.
The soleniod contacts can burn
The drive can wear
Any of these can cause the problem whereby you need to hit the key a few times for it to work.
There is a small possibility the contacts in the ignition switch are dirty or worn as well.
Artie first check the fluid level with the trans warm Idleing in neutral if it is low top it up with only hyundai trans fluid if this also if the fluid has a strong aroma to it, the fluid should be replaced although this is a sign of a failure in the trans and will be getting close to the time where it needs to be replaced
