1992 maxima. 2 or 3 times a day the car acts as if it is being shut down and restarted very quickly, duration appears to be less than a second, multiple times if I kept pressure on the gas pedal. After trying to look for a pattern, I finally put the transmission in neutral when this happened and disciovered that the engine was actually "hunting" over a range of 1,000 - 2,000 rpm. This happens at any speed , idle to highway cruising.

Link 2, Link 3 and Link4. I think your problem is electrical, bad sensor(s) or computer(s). Speed Sensors. Check out the links here and let me know how this information applies to the problem you're having.
It sounds like your car has an intermittent open current feed problem. Has there been any electrical/component repair or replacement recently? If so, that would be a starting point for diagnosis. Sounds like an ignition switch type problem. If you had an intermittent battery connection, the car would continue to run from the alternator output, but would not cause the warning lights to go through their initial "bulb check" sequence. But if "on" voltage is lost at the ignition switch, or that circuit, it would.
