First thing to do is check the transmission fluid level and check for leaks. If the transmission is very low on fluid, for example a cooler line broke, it would cause this situation due to no pressure. If you do not see any outside leaks, but transmission fluid is very low, check your radiator overflow tank, if it is overfull and milky, this would mean the Trans cooler that goes through the radiator is leaking fluid into the coolant system.

When I start my car up and put it on Drive about 20 seconds late the car jerks and seems to run fine. Also the speed sensor is not working could the ECU have anything to do with it or the transmission

No, more than likely just a worn transmission, and bad sensor! these are both common with age!
For the transmission you could try Lucas transmission fix "stop slip".
I've had good experiences with lucas, and of course this IS NOT the "correct" fix, just a "time-buyer" if you will!
The sensor, would have to be replaced(more than likely!

2001 mitsubishi eclipse. Automatic transmission

Transmission may be low on transmission fluid or the transmission fluid pump failed. If it's electrical, you can still get it in to gear, but would not shift gears. Good luck and keep me posted, check transmission fluid level and have the transmission line pressure tested. Before that check all your fuses.

OD on Auto gearbox goes into neutral when cold

You need to have your transmission serviced. The fluid has gotten so thick in there that it builds up too much pressure and your transmission will either kick it out of gear or blow up. I'm glad it actually still works. Once the oil warms up it thins right out and it works no prob. Just service your tranny, and you'll be fine.
