A simple google search reveals this is a small leak in the emissions canister system vacuum lines. This can be as simple as a bad gas cap, or a cracked or broken vacuum hose.
most likely, the gas cap isn't on tight enough. If air is allowed to leak in, it affects the emission control system, which triggers the check engine light.
Code 442 is a small leak in the EVAP system. The computer vents the gas tank to the vapor canister when the engine is running. There is a leak in that venting system. Sometimes the problem is the gas cap, sometimes it is a hose or valve. A shop would need to check the gas tank and lines for a leak.
Not sure if you mean you do not have a gas cap or not. But if you do not have a gas cap, that is why you have the P0442 code and the check engine light on. The gas cap is part of the emissions system, it has to hold a vacuum. If it does not that is your "small Leak"...
the gas cap is the most common if u can reset code do so and if code comes back then need to check-- the fuel lines -purge valve and vent -also the canister--- for cracked disconnected damaged lines
First, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or go back to Auto place and have them erase the code from the computer.
If the code reappears after that, you need to go to a Auto service place that has a machine called a "smoker". It is the only way to find leaks in the fuel vent system.
I guess the easiest thing would be replace your gas cap, or at least remove it and clean all threaded parts & seal if you haven't already. Erase codes drive it, then re-check.Next check all hoses etc., going to your vapor canister for leak, and canister for any holes.
