Speedometer stoped working ,at first sometimes it worked sometimes did not now wont work at all,allso abs and brake and motor light on when speedo wont work,2001 dodge ram 4x4 with 360 engine

Some vehicles speedometer works off the ABS wheel sensors. Have the codes checked for the ABS system. Check the fuses for the ABS also.

Can be loose speedo wiring connectors under instrument panel or its issue with speed sensor on transmission.

If the red brake light and the ABS light are both lit up on the dashboard, do NOT drive the vehicle. It indicates a major malfuntion with the brake system. The red light indicates low brake fluid or the parking brake engaged. The yellow ABS without the red light, indicates a problem the computer found and it disables the ABS system while still having conventional brakes. Since both are lit, it needs the brake system repaired. What you replaced on the rear diff was probably the rear ABS sensor. The vehicle speed sensor for the speedometer should be located on the rear of your transfer case if you have 4WD, or on the rear of the trans if you have 2WD.

The speedo not working causes these 3 lights to come on due to the speed of the car needed for the ABS ESP to work . Engine management light is on due to the first 2 lights . Happenned to me last night. Dont know what is up with your speedo . You have to reset the lights after speedo fixing as I am uncertain whether they will reset themselves.

Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.

The ABS light can be just a sensor, or the speedo no working...follow the line of the speedo cable back from the gauge to the tranny is the fastest way...Normally its on the left side of tranny case.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

Theres a sensor on top of the rear axle called a speed sensor replace it , That will fix the abs and speedo problems.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.
