98Volvo s70 heater core just replaced and now it smells like oil and there is an oily film on the inside of the windshield. Why?

  • JOHN LAPIER Jan 22, 2017

What is on the inside windshield is antifreeze.Oil and antifreeze don;t mix like oil and water don't mix.The only other thing can think of is if you have a control valve to open and close its antifreeze line at least one feed or return witch would operate from the engine vacuum /pressure so vacuum to open pressure to close. This type of valve would be near the inlet and outlet part of the water lines on the fire wall going into the heater core.If the shout off valve using engine pressure shut the antifreeze off but the seal to the engine is leaking oil could get into the duct work and transfer to the wind shield in witch case look for high engine pressure PCV valve clogged engine control or AC function issues vacuum booster control unit power AST BRAKES abs brakes .You can have a vacuum test 30 to 40 psi at idle hot general normal 20 NOT BAD FOR OLDER ENGINE You just don't want 100 psi at 2000 rpms Let me know

Heater core

If you are losing coolant, the heater core is leaking. It may be difficult to tell if losing coolant-it is probably a very small leak. But if the oily film is antifreeze, it's the heater core.

1995 saturn! new water pump, and coolant. Changed alternator, and battery, changed oil, oil filter. noticed oily substance in overflow container. did a radiator flush, still has red, rusty color somet

Coolant is oil based. The oily mess in the overflow could be very old coolant. Or it could be engine oil from a leaking head gasket.
The rusty stuff on the floor inside the car could be from a leaking heater core.

Fumes escaping from ac vents inside vehicle while driving and leaves a film residue on inside of windshield whenever the heat or defrost are used.

Hello dedunwoodie.
Your heater core is beginning to leak coolant.
As the fan blows through it it is picking up the liquid and depositing it on your windshield.
It will need to be replaced to solve your problem.

2000 jeep cherokee does not heat or defrost fan

the oily substance you talk about is antifreeze, your heater core is damaged and leaking in the form of mist and going to your windshield you must replace your heater core in the dash generally behind the glove box.

Smell anitfreeze when turning on the heat

A good indication that the heater core is bad, is if you get a oily film on the windshield when the defroster is on. If the headgasket is leaking, the engine should run hotter than normal, you might get oil in the radiator, you might see coolant dripping down the engine. I would start with checking out the heater core first. It is a very big job(the dash has to come out).

??? heater core

If you smell antifreeze, the problem would be the heater core.
Another indication is when you turn on the defroster and see a oily film on your windshield.
The heater core would have to be replaced.
In order to do this the whole dashboard would have to come out to get the heater box out.
In a dealer the process would take about 4 hours from qualified mechanics who have done this before.
