A camshaft position (CMP) sensor is typically only used as a reference for sequential fuel injection into the cylinders by the powertrain control module (PCM). Technically speaking, the 2000 Honda Accord doesn't have a CMP sensor, rather a cylinder position sensor (CYP). This should not be confused with the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) which is primarily used for ignition timing. There are also two different engine options for the vehicle being the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine and the 3.0 V6 engine. Sensor locations will be different for each option so it's important to first identify which engine is in the vehicle. The CYP sensor for the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine is located inside the distributor and is not serviceable; the whole distributor would need to be replaced. The CYP sensor for the 3.0L V6 on the other hand is located behind the left camshaft pulley on the timing belt back cover and is a serviceable part. The 1998 Accord 3.0L has a camshaft sensor. The 2.3L has a "Cylinder Position Sensor" (CYP), which is used to detect the position of the #1 cylinder for fuel injection purposes. This sensor is located internal to the distributor and if it fails, the distributor must be replaced as a unit.
