Selespeed trouble i have the same problem, took it to a gearbox specialist today. they plugged it in = £25. it reported gear selector fault. i now need a new one =£150 from alfa (this is the gear knob in the car. under the part you put your hand on is a plastic module which is all part of the same thing). to get them to fit it = £150. this can only be got at from under the car. after removal of the exhaust and heat plate. it can't be done from inside the car, i tried today! so all in all around £325. assuming its the same problem. but defiantly the first thing is to take it for a check £25 at a gear box specialists (dont waste your time & money with a normal garage). the car will tell them. then at least you know exactly wot it is. The people i used are at 01302 739897 in doncaster (lost their card so dont know name). good luck. p.s there is a cheap one of these on ebay (£75) but of course whose to say it wont only go wrong anyway. as spending £150 to get it fitted + purchase price, i see it as may as well go the little extra and know its a good one being put in. again good luck ...(bloody alfa's)

No matter which shifting position it is in ,,,,,it will only go backwards

this is either a broken gear shift linkage, where moving the selector is not moving the corresponding cog in the box, or an internal gearbox fault, where the reverse unit is jammed in position.

either way, i think the gearbox will need to come out and be replaced/rebuilt by a gearbox specialist

Hi I have a mk4 golf gti with a problem selecting gears.I can select one or two (possibly 3rd and 4th)gears ,there are no nasty noises or crunches and this problem occurred whilst driving the car prior to...

Have you lost 1st, 2nd and reverse? Yes? 1.8 litre engine? This is a common fault on the gearbox. (They use it on Audi TT's). Your best option is to get it to a gearbox specialist. Trying to fix this at home without the correct tools could take you days. The problem is inside the gearbox. A rivet holding one of the gear selectors in position has snapped. A major effort to repair a simple problem.

My Alfa Romeo 156 won't start (Selespeed fault)

Had the same sort of problem with friend's 159 2.4 JTD two weeks ago, was towed to the dealers who fitted a new battery for a lot of money. (said the battery was stuffed) Same thing when his wife was shopping last Sat. Jumped started it and took it home, once started being a diesel it drove until switched off. Wouldn't start or even turn over, checked everything over 2 days, I'm a aircraft mech and he's an electrician. Sunday afternoon I said, Back to basics test for power to the starter solonoid - none,
He said, So the solonoid is stuffed,
I said, Test for earth at the starter,
He said, But the starter earths thru the motor.
I connected a jumper lead from the negative battery terminal onto a bolt on the motor, the motor started and ran straight away. Faulty earth strap. Apoligies from the dealer.
Moral of this story - I've owned 3 and currently own 2 Alfa's and all of them at some stage have had an earth problem.
Hook a direct earth from the battery to the engine.
Maybe this can help Howie.

I LEFT MY CAR PARKED OVER NIGHT IN NUTRAL ADN NEXT

Alfa's have a Nylon ball with the gear selector (under the gearbox). They wear pretty easily. This could be pretty worn, either that or you're running low on gearbox, or "selespeed" oil. Check them out. They're pretty important and can cause serious problems to the gear box if not looked after.

Alfa 156 selespeed fault

hi, it sounds like either your clutch needs replacing or the problem could just be that the gearbox needs oil this is best checking as the gearbox can sieze then this will be expensive to replace.
What you need to do is take it into garage and they will remove a plug on the gearbox with special tool then this tells them if the oil is low as some oil should come out of this lug if not then they will top this up for you hopefully solving your problem,
Having no oil in the gearbox could strip the gears and if its got to bad then these will need replacing but this is in the most severe of cases so hopefully your problem is just that the oil needs filling up so get this done and this will hopefully solve your problem.
If you have any problem then give me a shout or if you have any questions then give me a shout then ill be glad to assist you further.
