I have run into this problem many times on your particular type of radio. I have worked in a gm dealership for years. Sometimes we can reprogram them and they work better, but all will eventually need replaced. The cheaper option is to have an aftermarket radio installed, for the price of a new factory radio, you could have a much nicer aftermarket unit.

The CD player needs to recognize the "magazine". Once the IPod is plugged in then turn on the radio and press the CD button until it says Magazine.

If the radio works but the CD player doesn't it's something internal to the unit. The radio and CD player get their power source from the same wire that goes into the unit.

try unplug cd player and reconct

cd rack should pull out when you press the button down

the only other thing i can think of is that when it says enter single disk only that you do so to a point don't let it go all the way in
this may make the cd player think there is a disk in there
