Im working on a 2001 Nissan Xterra, it is idling rough and has almost no power. It already has new distrubutor cap and rotor, plugs and wires. Also replaced the crank sensor by the bell housing. Im pulling code p0340 and i cannot find the camshaft sensor. My code reader pulls that code and relates to Bank 1.
The camshaft sensor is located into distribuitor.......The camshaft position sensor is a basic component of the engine control system. It monitors engine speed and piston position. These input signals to the ECMare used to control fuel injection, ignition timing and other functions.
The camshaft position sensor has a rotor plate and a wave-forming circuit. The rotor plate has 360 slits for a 1° (POS) signal and 6 slits for a 120° (REF) signal. The wave-forming circuit consists of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) and photo diodes.
The rotor plate is positioned between the LED and the photo diode. The LED transmits light to the photo diode. As the rotor plate turns, the slits cut the light to generate rough-shaped pulses. These pulses are converted into on-off signals by the wave-forming circuit and sent to the ECM.
The distributor is not repairable and must be replaced as an assembly except distributor cap and rotor head.
NOTE: The rotor screw which secures the distributor rotor head to the distributor shaft must be torqued properly.

Here's the diagnostic procedure for DTC code 0340, directly from the service manual:
SOURCE: where crank shaft and camshaft?
Hi I have a 2002 altima and I just fixed all that stuff. The crankshaft sensor is a different sensor and located in a different place. The crankshaft pos. sensor is located in back of the motor next to the firewall maybe half way down toward the driver side. there was a few tricks to getting to it and replacing it that no one mentioned it but I got it down. I replaced it 3 or for times till I got the right one so I was able to do the whole thing in about 15 min at the end. if you still need help email me, its kinda easy once you know what youre looking for!

Bank One is the front. It is most likely your front O2 Sensor. If it decodes Knock Sensor, do not replace the sensor.
SOURCE: Car died. Cranks, but wont start. Codes P0328, P0340
Yes, if the camshaft position sensor has failed, your vehicle won't start.

Cam shaft and crank shaft are different but im told they have same code. The cam sps is located inside the distributer. They say you pretty much have to get a new distibuter when replacing. Am going thru the same thing myself. FOR THE SECOND TIME IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS
