I have a 92' Club Wagon with the 5.8 liter motor. For a year I had trouble with it cutting out on me after the engine warmed up. Now it will only run for a few minutes before it dies completely. I have also noticed using a spark light, that while it is running, if I mash the throttle, the spark quits completely for a second, then comes back...until the engine warms up of course, at which point the engine dies. I replaced the Plugs, Cap and Rotor, and the Fuel Filter with new parts ( the wires are recent). I also have a donor van that ran well except for the loud knock in the motor. I have swapped out the following without success, not necessarily in this order. PCM, ICM, distributor, Fuel pump, MAP sensor, oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor, some EGR parts and even the transmission range selector. Any ideas would be more than welcome.
If the module was not mounted on the distributor try replacing it. usually a hot problem can be traced to a pickup coil (in dist) or crank sensor or module problem. These coils can go open when they get hot and fail, cooling them off again and they work fine for a short time. The Ignition module has been a longtime problem with fords and seam to fail more often than the others altho they ware getting better. If the module was not mounted on the distributor try replacing it. usually a hot problem can be traced to a pickup coil (in dist) or crank sensor or module problem. The Econoline of that year was available with factory fitted 3, 4, and 5 speed transmissions. The 5 speed was only available as a manual transmission. So yes there are transmissions that will fit. Because of the age of your e250 you might struggle to find one so you will most likely have to go through a transmission specialist to get one. You could also try some of the Econoline Owners groups as they often have used parts for sale within the group.
If what was stated in the manual didn't work, perhaps you have a further problem? Call out a mobile auto-electrician, or auto-locksmith with a pro grade scan tool computer to check the module, and keys.

Unfortunately Ford doesn't supply a download for guides older than 1996.
If the changes were minor (they often are), the '96 version should help:
