SOURCE: playing burnt DVD disks on other dvd players
It is very possible that the head alignment on your DVD recorder is a little out.
Also, make sure that you are closing the session after doing the recording (burn). If the session is not closed, the DVD will not be playable on other players.

Sounds like a bad motor or motor controller inside the unit. Does it have fresh batteries?

I had the same problem...... Freezing Frames...................I unplugged it from the wall and let it sit for a couple days, and it cleared all of the memory modules

Invest in a new DVD player...it will be much simpler, will cost roughly the same amount AND save you the hassle of finding someone to repair the broken drive gear (cog) on the insertion/eject roller (if all else is known to be working). You will find it on the left side of the DVD bay connected to a tiny white worm gear and even smaller reduction gear. If you are handy with a precision hobby mill, you can easily turn a replacement gear out in relatively short order with only the tedious tasks of disassembly and reassembly of the shaft end to deal with. Be certain to unplug and discharge the capacitors in the machine before messing about the inside of the player (UNplug player and press the I/O, "on button," twice). One sturdy knife blade, one standard philips head and one small philips head screwdriver will be all you need for disassembly. If you are capable of opening the chasis and the DVD housing, you will be capable of removing the speed nut from the shaft of the insertion/eject roller and of deciding from there what you should do. Good luck.

A few small things to try. Turn off unit, unplug for 5 minutes, plug
back in, turn unit on.
There is a product called a cd/dvd lens cleaning disc. Worth the
investment to have around.
