You mention a "ticking" sound,,is this from the top or bottom of engine..?

Does the ticking go on acceleration or increase with engine speed..?

A ticking noise from the top usually indicates camshaft/valve noise..

Run your engine until at normal temperature, then turn off and leave for 5 minutes for oil to settle..

Make sure your car is on level ground and check your oil level..wipe dipstick and check it again, make sure you push the dipstick all the way in an re check oil level. Top up if necessary.

The best thing to do is remove old oil filter. Drop the old oil and fit a new filter, top up with new oil, run the car and check oil level again, top up if necessary.

Low oil and old oil can wear thin and cause ticking noise from top of engine, and will also NOT PROTECT your engine...oil is the blood of your car, check levels weekly at most and change every 12 months or as recommended by your car booklet.. Use the BEST oil you can afford.

SOURCE: how do I change my oil on my 98 ford escort zx2

Try this.

On level ground, jack up the front of the car and support it with axle stands.

Get an open container that will take more than 5 ltrs.

Under the engine block you will find the sump.

On the sump you should find a 13mm nut, this is the drain plug.

Undo the drain plug and have the empty container directly below the sump plug.

Retain the sump plug and clean it with a rag.

When the oil has drained out of the sump, put back the plug making sure the washer is in good condition and the plug is tight.

Now unscrew the oil filter having the old oil container below the filter housing to catch any oil.

Wipe around the the filter housing to remove any and all old oil.

Now offer up the new oil filter but do not tighten.

If the new filter fits the oil filter housing, then remove it and lightly oil the rubber seal on the filter with clean oil.

Now refit the filter and tighten it up. Not too tight, you can do this by hand but get it as tight as you can.

Now lower the car to to the ground.

At the top of the engine you will find an oil filler cap. Undo this cap.

Now put in the new oil to just below the full mark on the dip stick. Let the oil drain through the engine to the sump for a couple of minutes before checking the oil level.

If the level is between 1/2 and full, replace the filler cap and start the engine.

Now look at the oil filter and the sump plug for any leaks. Also check around the oil filler cap for oil leaks and spillage.

With the engine turned off. Clean any oil spillages and tighten up the oil filter, sump and oil filler cap as required.

Now leave the oil to drain back to the sump for a few minutes.

Check the oil level and top up as required.

I find that it is best to top the oil up to just below the Max mark.

This should solve the problem.

CAR DOSENT START

there are number of things that lead to such situations.
1. you need to check if your fuel pump is still running or if its power supply is not broken. maybe u only need to replace a broken fuse and u are back on the road, or replace the pump.
2. the power supply to the coil pack/module must be checked too. if u still power on these items and and the car fails to start u must consider replacing them both.
3. also pull out and replace ur fuel filters...check if they are not clogged with dirt...if there is dirt it is likely the injectors are blocked too.

I hope this helps u...good luck

98 FORD ESCORT ZX2 DIES WHEN YOU STOP AND HAS LOST SOME POWER

The car could probably use a tune-up. Also, check both ends of the PCV line for soft/deteriorated elbows as a vacuum leak here would cause the car to die at idle.

I have 3 problems with my 98 Ford ZX2... 1. it idles very roughly and settles down if I put it on Neutral. There's also a noticeable lost of power when I speed up. Seems like it lags then power kicks in...

Hi

firstly the rough idel and poor power will be the air mass sensor or a air pipe sucking in too much air. however it could also relate to the sticking in park. being automatic it has a torque converter that basically transfers the power from the engine to the gear bos making drive. when these start to go you wil get issues with sticking in park, high and erratic idle and a ticking noise.

I would have the converter checked first it could be that the system is in need of a fluid change and it will start to clot up in cold weather so do have it flushed through and bleed the entire system, this will be much cheaper than a new torque conveter as they are about $300 to $400 at worst.

You would also loose power through this as the clutch would spin and sound like you where really on the gas when in fact it is not transfering the engine power to the gearbox.

Hope this helps
Regards

Dan

Ford tick over problem

Hi there!

A few more things to check for you.-

A vacuum leak in any of the vacuum hoses will cause the ECU to make random guesses at what's going on.

Have you replaced plugs recently - or at all? This is probably the main cause - and certainly worth a try.

Fuel filter should be replaced at recommended intervals - about 3 years.

Clean your leads and HT gear really well with a degreasant. Any losses will be more noticable at tickover than high revs.

Lastly.........wear on cam lobes or timing belt.

Hope it's cheap for you!
Please spare a moment to rate as fixya! if any of this information proves useful. Thanks (I don't get paid for this)
