My car turns over like it wants to start but never connects. Also the security light came on yesterday and this never happens. What could be wrong?

If you have the second ignition key's with you try it.  If not try this, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help.

First thing is you have gottin to comfortable with you car....When you start your car you need to keep the key in the start position just a fraction longer. If your engine is known to start up with a bump of the key. If the timeing to let off the key is too soon the security system thinks the car is being stolen.
A ignition switch may be going bad. There are a few other things that can be going bad also....
If your car fails to start and the security light is on here are the steps to get you going again.

First you need not keep cranking the engine, You will only drain your battery and burn up a starter.
Turn you key to the run position and leave it there for around 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes the Security light will stop flashing. And will stay lit.
Next turn the key to the off position for a second or two.
Then start your engine and hold it in the start position just a fraction longer then when you think the engine has started. ....
This should work for most other GM models.

SOURCE: security light came on yesterday... nowy car

Turn key to run position and leave it there for about 10 mins.......or until security light goes out.
Car should start then.
Also......try another key.....the reader in the lock cylinder may like it better.

Car won't start, no sound at all when I try.

If you can get it to an auto parts store they can hook up a computer thing and tell you whats wrong. sounds alot like a bad starter.

2001 ford focus will not start

It sounds like...very frustrating. Really, a year?
If I understand correctly, sometimes the starter motor doesn't work? But every time the starter spins the engine, the car starts easily? If this is the case, then the problem is confined to the start circuit, which narrows it down a lot. Basically the starting circuit is the battery, the starter, and the ignition switch-and the wiring connecting and associated with the circuit.
It seems to be happening a lot now, so a tech with patience and understanding of your Focus starting circuit, should be able to have it occur and find the problem. It could be as simple as rust or corrosion on one of the electrical connections. The place to start is with the battery terminals and connections, the starter motor connections, battery ground connection and a couple of other grounds in the start circuit. The starter motor and attached starter solenoid could be taken off and tested on a machine to see if it has anything wrong. Parts stores will test them for free if people bring them in.
One thing you could try: you said slamming the hood might jolt something, and cause starting: sometimes you can cause a failing starter motor to turn on by tapping on the case. Find the starter- the positive battery cable is connected to it- and when it won't try to start, rap on the starter with a heavy screwdriver, or tap it sorta lightly with a hammer, then try to start. If it starts up, you have a failing starter. If it doesn't help, you will probably need someone with a multi-meter to check out the circuit.

2001 gmc jimmy will turn over but will not start

This could be due to a failing antitheft system. When this system fails, it misinterprets a lost signal as a security threat, thus turning off the fuel injectors. This is why the starter spins, yet nothing else happens. Look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT when you are trying to start the truck. These lights indicate this problem. This link explains.

you need to get a new ign. lock cylinder and chip key. Or you can get a lock cylinder and copy your old key with a regular key no chip. Take new cylinder, put old chip key in it. Plug into harness at the bottom of steering column just behind the dash, fine orange wire from existing one in the column. Hide lock cylinder under dash and start car with copy of old key.

check the earth lead connections to the engine from the car body, undo them, clean them up, and re assemble, then check the electric connectors to the starter motor the same way, check also plug connector is securely pushed into back of alternator.
Another thing to note, you mentioned the lights slowly dimmed after fitting new battery, this could indicate a major short circuit. good luck, P
