    To do what test?
Cranking (turning over of the engine to start it) has nothing to do with the fuel pump.

  • Richard Bailey Nov 24, 2016

I know that. I meant that is all I hear when key is turned on. No crank. All lights are good. Battery good. I was told to try a tester to see if it lights up by putting clamp on negative post and probe or touch off the ignition connection on starting motor. Does the key have to turned on to do this? Also could it be the starter relay or fuse

Check fuse for starter could be bad starter.

Your ECU is what acctivates your fuel pump realy. Put the key on the run possition and pull the ecu fuse for a few seconds and reinstall it ans it should accivate your realy for 5 seconds, Good luck.

SOURCE: Intermittent fuel pump engagement when turning key - 2001 Taurus

try cleaning the connector that goes to the fuel pump, sometimes they corrode on inside. If that does not fix, test the wires feeding fuel pump with a multi meter until the condition shows itself again, if voltage drops to zero or very low then wiring problem, if voltage is unchanged with problem and fuel pump is not working and connectors are all clean, try replacement of fuel pump.

SOURCE: Are there any main fuses on a 2001 plymouth neon

Have you checked the starter solenoid. Your battery + cable connects to this then + cable runs from it to your starter. You also have an ignition switch wire connected to this. Just follow your cable from the battery and it will lead you right to the part. Some times these will break inside or the contacts go bad inside and therefore you will not get power to start the engine, but you will have power to turn on lights or whatever other accessories. The part is about $15

04 400ex has lots of spark cpmpression and fuel timing is correct i dont no wat else to do

Did you check fuel pressure with a gauge? Autozone, some others, rent or loan fuel pressure gauges. If fuel pressure is good, check injector circuit. Each injector has two wires-power and ground. With key on- engine off, each injector should have battery voltage on the power wire (each power wire would be same color to all injectors)-use a test light or voltmeter to check for power.

If injectors have power to them with key on, post back and I can tell you how to check injector ground circuit with a test light. .... well here, you clip the test light lead on the POSITIVE battery post, and stick tester probe into the ground side terminal of injector connector. Now have someone crank the engine over: if ground circuit is good, the test light should be blinking. If both tests work, power and ground circuit, then injector circuit is good and they should be pulsing to spray fuel into the cylinders. Let me know what you find.

I have fuel coming to the motor but not going in it for a 98 chevy cavalier

Check the fuse for the injectors. If you have a test light, check for power to the injectors with key on. Pull off one injector connector to check for power. 2 wires to each injector-one is the power wire and powered anytime key is on. The other is the ground wire going into the computer, where it is internally grounded for a split second to pulse the injector-fuel is then sprayed out.
If power circuit is good, test the ground circuit: clip a test light lead to the POSITIVE POST of battery. Insert tester probe into the ground terminal of injector-the one that has no power with key on. Now have someone crank the engine over: test light should be blinking.
If both tests work-steady power to injectors with key on, and blinking tester on ground terminal with engine cranking, then the injector drive circuit and the ground circuit is working.
Let me know what you find. Good luck.

Just replaced the sending unit in my 1989 ford escort. getting fuel up to the injector but the injector isnt doing anything. whats the problem?

Check the injector circuit with a test light. Here's how: Turn key to on, not start. Ground the lead of a test light to a ground source, pull the electrical connector off an injector. There will be a power wire and a ground wire to each injector. With key on, power wire should have voltage. Probe the electrical harness to see if one of the injector terminals has power. Tester should light up. If nothing, check the injector fuse- under the hood or under the dash. The injector drive circuit (the hot side) should have power to the injector with key on. If not, check the drive circuit for a fault.

If the drive circuit works (the tester lit up on one terminal), then check the ground circuit. Move the test light clip to the positive post of the battery. Now probe the other terminal of the injector connector, the one that did not light the tester, and have someone crank the engine over. If ground circuit is working, the test light will now be blinking. If both tests are good, a steady light on the drive circuit, key on, and a blinking light on the ground circuit with engine cranking-then injector circuit is good.

I have a 03 Hyundai accent I just replaced the fuel pump I have no power to the fuel pump I've checked the fuses and the fuel pump relay it won't start I'm not sure what to do next

Do you have a test light? If not, go buy a cheap $5 test light-one with a lead to clip to a ground, and with a needle type probe.
Pull the fuel pump relay out of the terminals it is plugged into-you need to check if the power feed for the pump is still available at the relay. Clip the test light lead to a ground and touch the test probe to the positive battery post-to check that your ground is good- tester should light up. Now touch the probe to all of the terminals that the relay plugs into. One terminal should have power with key off. If no terminals have power, you have lost the power feed for the pump. Double check all your maxi fuses in the power distribution box. Either a maxi fuse or a fusible link will be the power feed for the fuel pump relay.
If the power feed is there at the relay, try a new relay. If still no pump, a shop will probably have to check your fuel pump circuit.
Did you check for power at the fuel tank while the key was held in crank? When the engine is cranking, the fuel pump wire should have power. When the key is turned to on, the fuel pump should have power for about 2 seconds, to pressurize the fuel system. Then when key is turned to crank or start, the fuel pump should stay on.

No signal to fuel pump or injecters

Pressure in the rail indicates the pump is working.
When the key is turned on, the pump will come on for about 2 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Then pump will shut off and not come on again until the engine is cranked. When cranked or when running, the pump will be on full time. To check if the pump is getting a signal, the engine must be cranking over. Or you may pick up that 1 or 2 second signal when the key is first turned to on. Is this the way you checked for power to the pump? How much pressure are you getting at the rail? Any pressure at all means the pump put it there.
Injector circuit test: Use a testlight and ground it to the engine. Pull off an injector connector and turn key to on. Probe the two wires to the injector. One wire should have power and light the testlight. If it does, the power side to injector is good. If nothing there, the injector drive circuit is out.
If you got a steady light on one wire, then check the injector ground circuit. Move the testlight lead from ground to the positive battery post. Now probe the injector connector's wire that did not light the testlight, while someone cranks the car over. If working right, the testlight should now be blinking, meaning the computer is properly grounding the circuit for injector to pulse. If both tests pass, the injector circuit is working right.
Good luck.

My 94 ford explorer 4.0 cranks but wont start. i have 38lbs of fuel at rail port and spark at wire. it also runs on etherfor a hot second. what else can i try?

Check your injector circuit. It will also let you know if the PCM is allowing the injectors to energize. Here's how:
Pull off one injector connector. Turn key to on. Use a test light and clip the black lead of tester to ground, Use the tester's probe to probe both wires in the injector connector. One of the wires should have power and light the testlight, meaning the injector power circuit is working. Now for the injector ground circuit.
Move the black lead of testlight to the battery positive post. Now probe the wire in the connector that did not light up. Have someone crank the car over. When cranking the test light SHOULD be blinking, meaning the PCM is properly grounding the injectors to work. If both wires passed the test, your injector circuit is good.
If it's not working, either the power circuit from ignition switch to injectors is out (no steady light), or the ground circuit from injectors to PCM is not working (no blinking light).
Good luck, post back with results for further assistance.

2000 Eclipse GT turns over but doesn't start. Fires once in a while but won't run. Had timing belt replaced.

Hi, if the car turn over, and it don't start. Then it is like the engine don't get fuel. Or bad a spark plugs. Most common problem is the fuel pump going bad.

It could also be a bad fuse, but a easy way to check if the fuel pump is ok is to have someone stand at the back of the car when you turn the ignition. The fuel pump should make a buzzing sound for a few seconds. And if you don't start the car right away the fuel pump will stop.

If you don't hear any buzzing from the fuel pump/fuel tank then you have a bad fuel pump............
