Possible faulty regulator or wiring from the alternator
for the battery to be draining noticeably when running one battery lead would be very hot to the touch and it would not start an engine so I suspect that you are forming that opinion from the gauges not showing a charge
that indicates that the alternator is not charging because of broken wires from the alternator or a problem regulator
I would take the vehicle to an accredited auto electrician so that all aspects of the charge system can be checked
Testimonial: "does a 2005 even have a regulator?"
the alternator has to have some method of regulating the output voltage of the alternator otherwise the battery would be boiled useless and the electronics would be destroyed
the regulator can be internal inside the alternator, on the firewall in the engine compartment or on some vehicles , in the ECM unit itself
that is why I suggested the trip to the auto electrician so that the problem area can be identified and fixed
