2003 chevy silverado 1500hd 4wdrive engine shuts off while driving and sometimes at idle, but restarts, drives a mile or 2 and does it again. Sometimes it takes waiting 5 or 10 minutes to restart ?
I would suspect a faulty EGR valve, but is the check engine light on? If it is, take the vehicle to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve the fault code(s) stored in the computer. Most parts stores offer this service free of charge. That will narrow the search for the problem. Sure hope this helped.
The EGR valve has been replaced, along with the fuel filter and many other things. The only light that comes on relates to the battery. We've had the battery replaced and that system has been checked repeatedly. Unfortunately, nothing shows up in the computer. One time it even drifted into the dealership. They saw first hand the problem, but after $650 of diagnostics, they had no idea. This is frustrating, and I'm concerned when my wife is driving it. Would appreciate any other thoughts. Thanks!
