I have a manual for a 2004 Dakota that is probably similar to the 2006 electrically. Dodge never called it a Body Control Module; earlier models did have the Central Timer Module (CTM) which functioned like Body Control Modules in other manufacturers vehicles.
In 2004, the CTM was replaced by the Integrated Power Module (IPM), which consists of the Front Control Module and Power Distribution Center, and is located next to the battery on the left inner fenderwell (the Front Control Module is underneath the Power Distribution Center, where you will find relays and fuses). There are several other modules which control various functions, and they communicate with each other through the Programmable Communication Interface (PCI) bus circuit, also called J1850.
The Front Control Module controls all exterior lights, except brake lights and turn signals, and the windshield wiper functions. Other modules (PCM, TCM, antilock brakes, heated seats, instrument cluster, power locks/power windows/power mirrors, etc) control other functions, but all communicate through the PCI bus.

Was any jbo recently there? Has anything been replaced? Do you know what fault codes are setting there? The first thing that will need to be done is check in the TIPM for fault codes. This is the module that controls the four wheel drive. If there are any codes they will need to be pursued.

If there are no codes then it's really going to have to be duplicated with a scan tool on it to diagnose the problem. There are a few possibilities:
- It could be the TIPM itself. This is the module/fusebox under the hood.
- It could be a wiring problem between the TIPM and the transfer case shift motor.
- It could be the transfer case shift motor. It has internal position sensors, and if it were to tell the TIPM it was in an incorrect position then the TIPM could change modes unrequested.

Additionally, it could also be the switch. If the switch's signal voltage was out of range enough then it's position could be interpreted incorrectly by the instrument cluster, which would then tell the TIPM over the bus network to try and make a range shift.

Keep us updated.

Eric, You may not have a BCM, it may be a FCM (Front Control Module) according to the forums below. They say the FCM is located between fuse/relay center and front inner fender. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Where on a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT 4x4 v6 is an ignition module located at and what does it look like

Doesn't your truck have a distributor? If yes, the ignition system is run by the pcm. Power is delivered to the coil, and the pcm uses the crankshaft position sensor signal to interrupt the ground signal to the coil at the appropriate time to produce a spark. The distributor delivers the resulting spark to the appropriate cylinder. There is no ignition module.
