The generic info for problems at higher rpms, check for a blockage of some kind, fuel--air--exhaust.
How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? It's not a tranny issue, correct?

I just got done with this same problem. Check a small looped vacuum hose just behind the mass air flow sensor which is attached to the air filter housing. the hose will be toward the plenom on the right side next to a blue connector. They have a tendency of getting soft.

either fuel filter or fuel pump...replace filter since its cheaper. 6-12 dollars at autozone
SOURCE: dies out when i start it and wont go past 35mph
not sure but the 89 probably has a mechanical fuel pump and this is a symptom of one getting weak.

Hello! There are several reasons for the fault you describe...Since you did not mention the Check Engine Light being on the trouble isn't being picked up by the computer...The top two causes would be; #1...A clogged fuel filter and #2...A fault in the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS)... this sensor can have a defect that will not be picked up...If the fuel filter hasn't been changed in quite some time, replace it...If that does not clear the problem the TPS can be tested with a voltmeter before you buy another...I'll send the test procedure for the TPS (very easy to do) if needed...Guru..saailer
