2000 pontiac montana security system locked and it won't start. The information center on the van shows as follows; Low battery light, Then Security light, Then Low fuel light. Its full of gas. Help?

I know it's the security system. I've tried all my tricks. The last time this happened it would crank then it shut off by itself, I disconnected the battery for 10min. and it fixed it but now its saying (LOW FUEL) but its full. I never seen any vehicle do that.

  • Jeff Armer Oct 27, 2016

Do you have a scan tool that will communicate with all the modules on the vehicle ? Check for U-code's . You know about these ?

You say your scan tool won't work ? Does it have power on pin 16 at the DLC ? Do you know what a splice pack is ? Under the dash near the DLC is splice pack 205 this is a connection point for all the modules on the vehicle before one wire feeds pin 2 of the DLC . This is the class 2 data bus for communication . this is the wire your scan tool talks with the module .One shorted module or wire shorted to ground will bring down the system .

OK, I didn't have power to my scan tool. I leaned how to bypass the wire to give my scan tool power and it worked but my tool couldn't scan it. I got new info. I poured gas in the intake and it cranked. I check fuel pressure and it had none so I jumped the fuel pump relay and it still won't start. The tank is full but it says low fuel.. Does the security light come on when you turn the key to run ,Does it go off in a few min. The proper way to reset the anti-theft system would be to turn the key to the on position for 10 min. if the light goes out in that time ,turn the key off for a few seconds . Then try an start the vehicle . If light comes back on an won't start there is a hard fault . You mite at that point wan't to do a theft system by- pass . Also have your battery checked and or charging system . A low battery , a malfuctioning charging system may cause these type problems .

Testimonial: "The security light stays on and it also says low fuel. The 10min. reset don't work. It has a new battery and I cleaned and checked all plugs on ECM and plugs on fuse box. What type of pass key does it have 1-2-3? All the dash lights and radio comes on... By;Jason Pust/Express Automotive"

The vehicle VTD functions are provided by the Pass Key® III system. Pass Key® III consists of an ignition key with a transponder embedded in the head, the theft deterrent controller module, the exciter assembly, and the PCM.

The exciter assembly is an antenna which is made up of wire coils which surround the ignition lock cylinder. These coils, powered by the theft deterrent controller module, emit electromagnetic energy which energizes the transponder pellet within the head of the key. The energized transponder transmits a unique value by radio frequency which is detected by the exciter. The theft deterrent controller module receives and compares this value to one stored in memory (a learned value). If the received transponder value matches a learned value, the theft deterrent controller module sends a password via the class 2 serial data line to the PCM. The PCM compares this password to one stored in memory (a learned password). If the passwords match the PCM enables engine starting.

This password is unique for each theft deterrent controller module along with the unique value of the key's transponder. This method prevents swapping one of the following modules in order to start the vehicle:

    • The Theft Deterrent Controller Module - which must receive the unique key value and then sends a unique password.

    • The PCM - which must receive the correct password from the theft deterrent controller module to enable engine starting.

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure - Domestic Vehicles Only
Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components:

    • The keys/lock cylinders

    • The theft deterrent controller module

    • The PCM if necessary, refer to the Important statements above

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, using a master Pass-Key® III key (black).
Observe the security telltale. After approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat step 1-3 two more times, for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
Important: The vehicle learns the key information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

Start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key and password information.
Clear any DTCs using the scan tool.

    Tools Required
    • Tech 2 Diagnostic Tool

    • Techline Terminal with current service programing system (SPS) software

Connect the Tech 2 Diagnostic tool.
Select Request Information under Service Programing.
Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle and connect the Tech 2 to a Techline Terminal.
On the Techline Terminal, select Theft Module Re-Learn under Service Programming.
Disconnect the Tech 2 from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, using a master Pass-Key® III key (black).
Select VTD Re-Learn under Service Programming.
At this point the Tech 2 must remain connected for the duration of the 10 minute re-learn period.
Observe the security telltale. After approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off. The vehicle is now ready to re-learn the key information and passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds.
Start the vehicle. The scan tool has now learned the key and password information.
Clear any DTCs using the scan tool.

Turn key on but do not attempt to start. Wait 10 minutes. Turn off. Then on. Make sure security light goes off before trying to start. Sounds like security system thinks vehicle is being stolen

My 2002 pontiac montana security and battery light flashing and now it wont start

you could have a bad alternator not keeping the system at the appropriate level of charge. Or check the battery, replace with other known battery that is good and see if this fixes the problem. Clean all battery terminals. Dead shorts in battery can really create problems and sometimes can load test good but on the low side. Try the battery swap first if you have access to one

2002 pontiac montanna van will not start.security light is flashing on.might be in theft mode

Yes the flashing light means the module did not read the chip in your key as being the right one for the van.
Could be the key, the sensor in the lock cylinder, or the module.

Could be security if changed out your battery. Look in your owners manual for resetting the passlock II.
