Re: I have a 08 mini s a frien gave a key fob from his 08...
It has to be taken to the dealer but you will also need the key code for the key your friend has supplied or there will no good. Or a good car key specialist.
The code usually comes in the service pack supplied with the car or the only other way i's to call the local mini dealer and ask for parts and give them the last 7 digits of the chassis number of your friends car and see if they can supply you with the key coding number. The code usually comes in the service pack supplied with the car or the only other way i's to call the local mini dealer and ask for parts and give them the last 7 digits of the chassis number of your friends car and see if they can supply you with the key coding number.

buy online fob and and look up online also the procedure to program it if you have auto /remote start dealer needs to flash it then as to key dealer or an authorized locksmith and most key cutting places can cut vehicle keys now
Your Ford dealer sounds just like our local Ford dealer...
They probably just cut plain none-transponder keys or didn't follow the key programming instructions properly.
Perhaps the keys and security system need reprogramming together.
Whatever the reason it is quite unacceptable to take a Ford car to a Ford dealer and be told they don't know how to fix it.
I strongly suggest you take someone there gently by the throat and question the parentage while threatening to contact Ford customer service.
A local auto locksmith might be able to further advise you.
programming key fobs is best done with the vehicle connected as well
take it to a service dealer who has the gear to program the key and the immobiliser at the same time
There may be alternate ways to do this but although it is expensive , it is best to take the vehicle and the new key to a service dealer centre and have the programming done properly so that the immobiliser and other operated equipment are all programmed together correctly.
I had one go bad on a Buick of mine...After replacing the battery. A couple of times. Had to go to the dealer for a new one.....It also had to be programmed by the dealer....
Many times the dealer gives you a valet key made to give to the vet to park your car, these keys work even though the theft deterant system is active, but they will only work for short periods untill the theft system activates and imobolizes the vehicle. The system is reset when the valet brings your vehicle and you insert your normal (chiped) key.
There are no self programming procedures for a 2009 Mini Cooper. The best solution is call a few local automotive locksmiths and see if they have the tools to program this. You can save a little money by ordering a Mini Cooper Key Fob Replacement online.
I KNOW WHEN I BROUGHT MY WIFES CAR THE DEALER SHOWED ME HOW TO PROGRAM THE FOBS FOR HER CAR NOW I'M SURE THAT NOT ALL DEALERS WILL TELL YOU HOW TO DO THIS BUT THEY SHOULD AND YES THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE BOOK SHOULD BE RIGHT
