How long does it run? Sure you only changed the serpentine belt? The car would actual even run without the serpentine (or also called accessory belt) since the belt only drives fairly non essential components (AC compressor, alternator, fan, power steering pump. etc).
It will not be cheap when you have to pay for all the repairs that the car will need. These are very expensive cars to maintain and fix.
The owner is selling the car because he does not want to pay the repair costs needed or he cannot afford the repair costs. If it was a minor fix (which it is not) the owner would have had it repaired and have a car that runs to sell instead of one that does not run and will be hard to sell.

if this is a European car then the fuel system is a return to tank type,the vent is actually in the filler cap.try replacing same.
the banging could also be the exhaust hanger(rubber)missing or flexing onto the underbody.
