How hard is it for a shadetree mechanic to replace the manifold absolute pressure sensor on a 2000 4-cylinder Olds Alero? When I bought the part, it says it is an EGR vavle and I remember replacing those...

The EGR valve and MAP sensor are indeed different and unrelated parts. An EGR valve that is stuck open can however cause the system to set a false MAP sensor code due to the loss of vacuum in the intake which will cause the sensor to read low but the engine should run very bad, if at all, when this happens. The MAP sensor is located slightly to the drivers side of the throttle body housing on the front side of the motor and is easy to replace. I'd make sure that your EGR valve isn't stuck open or that you don't have another large vacuum leak that could mimic a faulty MAP sensor before replacing it however. Hope this helps a bit and good luck!
