That is possible but it should set some kind of a fault code, have it tested by a local transmission repair shop, in most cases they will do this for free in the hope of getting the repair business.

SOURCE: My 2002 Nissan Maxima hesitates to start

if vehicle hesitates to start do you mean long cranking time (posible fuel pump) or no crank at all then suddenly starts then it is possible starter solenoid (notorious) - complete starter assembly needs replacement.

Take you vehicle to a nissan dealer as soon as possible because you could be having some major transmission problems. If you have vehicle warrent, see what it covers. Could be a costly repair.

SOURCE: my 2005 nissan maxima jerks and races. Is that my

I have encountered this problem before. Your transmission is probably the aisin warner 5550. These 5 speed automatic transmissions were used in some maximas from 2004 - 2006. The short answer is you will at least need a new & updated valve body. Because the valve bodies tend to have that problem, other internal transmission damage may result. I rebuilt and updated a valve body for a customer and the max ran fine after that. Even now months later, my customer's transmission is still running great and it has never jerked again. I already wrote a long post with pictures on enginegeeks.com. If you want to see it go here : http://www.enginegeeks.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3

It's not the motor mounts and a transmission flush won't do the trick. These transmissions **** HARD!

My 2004 maxima goes into 5th gear when put into drive. the code it read was 0340 crankshaft sensor. before i changed it the problem was intermitint now the problem exists all the time what else can i do...

The crankshaft sensor has to do with the engine and not the transmission. It sounds like the transmission has a problem unrelated to the engine rpm or movement measurement (through the crankshaft sensor).

I would have the transmission checked out for solenoids or fluid level being off or have that portion repaired before changing any camshaft sensors.

Camshaft sensor malfunctions would show up as an engine code if it were not reading valid signals.

Good luck on this repair.

MY 1997 NISSAN MAXIMA IS MAKING GROUNDING NOISE WHILE I'M IN PARK

sounds like your automatic transmission is failed and grinding itself up. How often have you had the transmission fluid changed? You are going to have to REPLACE the transmission and not even try to repair it. Once they start grinding things up , they are not repairable.

Transmission down-shifts eratically

I doubt it, try replacing the transmission control unit (TCM) or transmission computer. Follow these links so you can learn more and hopefully be able to diagnose your problem better. Link 2, Link 3 and Link4. I think your problem is electrical, bad sensor(s) or computer(s). Speed Sensors. Check out the links here and let me know how this information applies to the problem you're having.
