If you have a carby check that the auto choke is working correctly. If is set too tightly closed it will flood the engine every time and pumpin the pedal will not help the situation. Mostly the correct adjustment should be almost closed but will open under air flow.
Hi. I would think you should get an engine management light on with such aproblem
if you have, then a code check should find the problem.
Other than that,it could be the crankshaft position sensor or cam sensor or temperature sensor which is giving the wrong signal to the computer.
A diagnostic check will certainly find the problem

if you leave it in park and pump the gas peddle a few times does it choke itself into a stall? if so then check and replace the air filter, its probably long overdue to be replaced
