Its ware in the ignition switch not the key switch .
Ford has had problems with this its 20 to 30 for the switch .
It can also be tested with a multi meter go to a Ford dealer and ask them to print it out of the manual .It will give you step by step witch connections should have continuity OHM'S in what positions

Testimonial: "So not where the key goes in switch, its the ignition switch - has a post that moves back and forth as you turn the key - correct?"

  • JOHN LAPIER Sep 22, 2016

Yes that's correct and it can be tested.Talk to the dealer 1 page is all you need and a 10 dollar meter analog has a dial digital won't work as well. It could also be a bad connection but this is the place to start trace it back to B+the battery you might be amazed how simple these problems can be if you just look closely enough at the problem

My 2004 Santa Fe will not start steering wheel will not lock I wonder if that's the problem just started yesterday.

The wheel (all theft and safety) locks are connected to other components. They are on shifter, brake, and steering wheel. Try putting vehicle in neutral and with foot on brake see if it will start like that. It may just be a little off for wheel, brake, and shifter to mesh and lock up. They all have a say in how it goes. If vehicle is on hill of any kind it can keep locks from going, if wheel is turned to odd spot, or lock from shifter is off, they can all keep system from locking up. Would guess that it is not starting because one of the neutral safety switches is not engaged and wheel lock is kind of a side affect of this also. If you can take key out of ignition but wheel is not locked there is clearly an issue with the lock up system. But the wheel lock points are not at every inch of wheel turn. Sometimes you turn vehicle off with wheel at a point a little off from one of the holes and you just turn wheel a bit and lock will engage. But try starting in neutral - try moving shifter all the way back and then into park (with brake pushed) and see if they will get back in sync. You may have to push / roll vehicle a little to get weight off shifter and wheel, but if shifter moves from park with no brake, or key comes out with no wheel lock (or with shifter not in park) something in the 3 way lock system has come out of sync.

1992 Olds cutlass ciera s V6 3.3 won't start. Starter and battery working properly and tried to putting car in neutral and nothing happens. any ideas to try next?

You need to test your mechanical ignition switch located on top of the steering column by your feet. Remove bottom panel below steering column then 2 or 4 nuts holding column to dash. Lower steering column - the rectangular component with the metal rod going in the back side ( goes toward the steering wheel ) is the mechanical ignition switch. Disconnect and inspect harness for corrosion and dirty contacts. If the contacts are clean ( not green, white, or burnt) then look closely at the mounting screws to see if there are marks from where they were originally mounted - it is possible the switch moved away from the steering wheel which would keep that metal bar from activating the start circuit. If the switch moved, loosen mount screws and move switch back to original spot. If the switch didn't move then you can try starting the car with the key and moving that metal arm manually, pushing it toward the engine to activate start circuit. The switch MUST be mounted to the steering column for the circuit to be open ( complete) as the ground is supplied through the mount screws. If this still doesn't work then replace the switch.
Good luck!!

When I put the key into the ignition and try to turn it it wont turn. The steering wheel is lock and when I try to move the steering wheel to find the "sweet Spot" to turn the key and start the car the key...

If your are turning the wheel to the "sweet spot" like you said, and you are using the right key, do you have a second key that still won't work? Then ignition lock tumblers are worn. You or dealer has to fix.

2000 Rodeo has intermittenly starting problems

It sounds as if your neutral safety start switch may be failing. This switch only allows for the safe start of an engine when the automatic transmission is in either park or neutral. It seems when you move around the gear selector you get it back to a spot where the switch allows the engine to start. Next time this happens while in park, try wiggling around the gear selector or place your foot on the brake (so you don't roll away) and place the transmission in to neutral. If it fires up you know to either adjust or replace the switch for the park position.

I hope this might have helped,
Tom

2005 Chevy Impala key seats in ignition but will not turn

With the key in the ignition try turning the steering wheel side to side, it may require a bit of force in either direction to get the wheel freed up and allow the key to turn. This happens when you don't allow the steering wheel to come to a resting spot before removing the key from the ignition.

2005 chrysler 300 steering problem

U have a failed steering rack internal seal, the leakage causes the hard spot, most likely the seal surface is scored allowing fluid to leak by at a certain position of the wheel. Try getting a bottle of LUCAS oil brand power steering sealer and conditioner, it really works. also check and see if the PS fluid is disclored, if it is get a cheap turkey baster and **** out as much fluid as possiable and add clean fluid.

95 Riviera gives a buzzing sound when I try to start it

I'm not sure of what you are saying but it sounds to me that can't start the car while the steering wheel is in one of the tilt positions but then it will start when in another position. If this is the case then it sounds to me that the starter engage wire in the steering column is being pressed into something and grounding out the signal when you try to start the car while in the bad tilt position. The reason it'll allow the car to start in the other position is that when the steering wheel is moved from the bad position it allows the pinched wire to be moved away from what ever it's being grounded off on. The buzzing sound could be the other stuff happening when the ACC part of the switch is engaged. You could try taking the column cover off and looking around at the wires that come off of the switch and inspecting them. You would be looking for a damaged wire, either it would have a flat spot or you would be able to see the bare wire through the sheething. If you find a bad spot on the wire then just take some electrical tape and wrap it around the wire three of four times. Then try to reroute the wireing so as to get it out of the way of the pinch point, zip ties are good for this part. Due to the nature of the problem that sounds like the bad spot on the wire will be around where the joints in the steering column are.
