Sounds like brake shoes are knocking. Try backing up while pumping brakes or using the emergency brake a few times to tighten up shoes. If those don't work you may have to manually adjust shoes with star wheel or maybe defective (out of round) drum

The passenger rear brake makes a thumping noise when pushing the brake

Drums brakes. This could be an adjustment problem or a spring has broken. Slack adjusters do lock up from brake dust or rust.
Rotors. This could an adjustment for the E brake shoes, Or the pad has broken off the shoe. Also if a bolt broke or came out of the caliper.

Do you have abs system, if so, check for applicable abs codes, see if anything shows up? Go from there.

How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier

After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

Best way to remove rear brake drums on an 06 equinox

Hello, there is two ways to remove the drums. First way is to use a hammer and tap the back side of the drum as you rotate it untill it becomes free. Second way is to use a brake spool to back the shoes off, on the back side of the drum is a small opening it may be covered by a piece of rubber. Just pop that out, using the brake spool rotate the star wheel key till the shoes are backed off the drum than it should come right off.

S 10 1997 Chevy Blazer brake locking up

Common cause is the drums and brake shoes need to be replaced. When there no longer within the the specification for the brakes to work properly, the self adjusters will over adjust the brake shoes and you'll have the feeling of the rear drum brakes lock up as the shoes will bind up along the drums. Replace both Shoes and Drums and this can be done on your own will common tools and a simple brake spring tool that you can pick up at Auto Zone or Parts Source and both can give you the step by step instructions to replacing the rear brake system. Good luck and be safe.

Passenger side rear brake locked up.

It's probably the emergency brake cable that is stuck. Check that first. When I get a drum brake that is totally frozen up (like been sitting for 40 yrs) I often use 2 or 3 pry bars, WD40 and short handle sledge hammer to pry a little on both sides, liberally keep penetrating oil squirted on the shoes and tap on all sides. Eventually drum will come off, but sometimes it takes like maybe 1/2 hour. Shoes will have to be replaced, but they are probably shot anyway. The drums for the caravans are cheap, so I would not only get them, but the spring kit from the parts house as well.

Removing rear break drum from a 2006 chevy Equinox

You need to de-adjust your rear brakes and/or slacken off the park brake cable to remove the drum as the chances are the drum has a wear lip that the shoes are getting hung up on. ( first make sure there isn't a little retaining screw holding the drum on !..visible with the wheel removed)

05 Equinox not able to remove right rear brake drum

Hiya...
Most rear brake-shoe design take some time to adjust than disc brakes...
If you have a special brake adjustment tool that your local automotive store sells, get this tool and pull out the rubber grommet plug, insert the brake adjustment tool until you 'feel' or hear the sound of 'skipping' on the brake self-adjuster spool inside as you wiggle /adjust the tool inside....(push it inside to get a firm feel that you can 'spin' it)
Try to push the tool downward or upward to check if that'll spin the brake self-adjuster part smaller to allow the brake shoes to 'shrink' which should allow you easy removal of the rear brake drum as you wiggle it out.

Be sure not to breathe in toxic brake dust upon successful brake drum removal.

REAR BRAKES

i think your aware of how to change the brakes if im right and your problem is the rusted drum doesnt want to come off the only way to get the old drum off is to remove adjuster plug from behind drum dustshield and adjust the shoes so that there not even close to the braking area of the drum then try and wiggle the drum off of the assembly if it is not coming off then you need to use the old nylon hammer on the drum and i mean you must hit the drum from side to side trying by hand to wiggle the drum off its a tight fit and you need to strike the drum on the face not on the fins not wanting to damage with persistance and care and patience you will eventually be able to remove the drum to service brakes take care and good luck with it
