My 96 Toyota Avalon won't engage in any gears?

I just bought a 96 Toyota Avalon for super cheap, but it would only drive right for a block and then it stops engaging in any gears. I then have to turn the key off completely, let it sit for a minute and start it up again and do it all over again..... That was a couple of weeks ago. It's been sitting and now it won't ever engage in any gears at all I'm wondering how to locate the shift solenoid as well as the sensors. I'm thinking that is where I need to begin checking.

The reason you got it super cheap was because of this. The filter is clogged with clutch material. Transmission needs rebuilt. $2000 to $3000+. Don't spend money on the solenoids, they won't help it.

It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

Sometimes CV joints develop bad harmonics when they are out of sync with each other in a certain way. It passes, until they line up just right to start vibrating again. Bad design.

Replacing a starter

Replacing the starter on a 96 Avalon is incredibly simple. I did it in the parking lot of a store. Just bring your ratchet set and you will be good to go. I took out the old starter, had a friend bring me to autozone and I bought a new one. Its easy to locate, easy to remove and easy to install.

Where is the starter on a 96 Avalon? Can tapping it with a hammer help it to start to take it in for repair?

If you are looking at the motor from the front, the starter is on the right, about mid-way down the block. I dont know if you are handy att at all with tools, but replacing it is very simple. I am no mechanic and I was able to replace it in the parking lot of a store. All you need is a ratchet set. Get a picture of what a starter looks like, locate it, then unbolt it. Get someone to drive you to an Autozone, Pepboys, Etc...They should have one for (I believe) 140. Just literally slide it back into the slot and rebolt it. It is much easier than you might imagine and much cheaper than Toyota.

Shifting problems in Automatic Avalon , Reverse won't work either

Check at OBD II port and post back what codes you get. Shifting is done by Solenoids on/in the transmission. Reverse could be a Linkage problem also if no codes are present.
