what engine?if it's a 5.2 l V8,you could remove right inner fender shield for easier access..i would not remove trans..if you remove trans and then install sensor to engine,you could break it reinstalling trans..if it's a 4.7..sensor is in block..these can be really tough to get out..rust forms behind sensor and it will not come out..most times these come out in pieces

You would use a low voltage test light or analog meter depending on what you are testing for. The sensor generates a reference pulse.

I don't know liter size of engine? I looked at info for the 1.5L engine. In the wiring diagram it showed no crank sensor, but, did show cam sensor in distributor.
