Because of the thread pitch and length.if thread pitch is wrong u will damage the thread and the bolt will vibrate loose.if the bolts to long the sensor wont seat correctly thus unable to correctly read

Your vehicle has a sophisticated computer system, and you just connect a professional grade scan tool computer to it and it will give you a code. The code tells you what is wrong, and from there you can search the fix. There was nothing wrong with the starter motor, fuses and relays can be tested. If your Crankshaft Sensor was made in China or in Mexico, 2 weeks can be the average lifespan on a faulty one! Only buy OEM Sensors as they are the most important parts of making your vehicle run efficiently.

How do you replace the crankshaft position sensor

1.) Disconnect the negative battery ground cable before you begin the install process.

This is an important safety measure; it ensures that there will be no accidental shocks that could injure you; and as a means of preventing any damage to the car's electronic panel.

2.) Usually the crankshaft position sensor is placed in front of the engine, by the main pulley. In some cars, the sensor may be placed at the side of the engine or at the back.

3.) Notice that the crankshaft position sensor is secured in place by a bolt and there are wires attached to it.
First remove the wire harness (it generally comprises of three wires) from the sensor.
Pay attention to the wire connections as you will have to reattach them in the same order once you change the crankshaft position sensor.
When the wires have been disconnected, unscrew the bolt. This can be done with the help of a socket wrench. Once the bolt is removed, you can remove the failing sensor and replace it with the new sensor.

4.) Place the new sensor in exactly the same slot. This part is a little tricky.
The sensor is sealed to the interface with a mechanical gasket better known as an O-ring. When you change the crankshaft position sensor, you also need to reinstall a fresh O-ring, as the old one can't be reused.
Place the O-ring around the sensor as you install the new crankshaft position sensor in place. When you are done, reconnect the wire harness in the same order as they were- prior to the install.
Usually, the unit will lock into place. If the sensor does not lock into place and requires adjusting, use a paper spacer to achieve the above result.
Once the sensor is in place, you're done with the repair installation.

The dual Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is mounted to the front of the engine, attached to an aluminum bracket mounted to the left side of the engine at the timing chain cover. A 4-wire connector plugs into the sensor, connecting it to the ignition control module.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly and the right inner fender access cover/splash shield.
  5. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer, using a puller if necessary.
  7. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the CKP sensor shield.

  1. Unplug the sensor electrical connector.
  2. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the block face.
    2. Remove the sensor from the pedestal.
  3. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the sensor from the block face.

To install:
  1. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
  2. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
  3. Position the sensor, with the pedestal attached, on crankshaft sensor installation tool J 37089 or equivalent.
  4. Install the bolt to hold the pedestal to the block face, then tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  5. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt to 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  6. Remove the special tool.
  7. Place the crankshaft sensor tool on the crankshaft balancer and turn. If any vane on the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer.
  1. For 1992-99 vehicles, install the CKP sensor on the block.
    1. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
    2. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
    3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.

  2. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  3. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm) for 1987-91 vehicles. For 1992-99 vehicles, tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 7 degrees rotation.
  4. Install the inner fender shield and the right tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  6. Install the serpentine belt.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

  11. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  12. If removed, install the inner fender shield and the right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).

  11. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).

  6. Remove the CKP sensor shield. Do NOT use a prybar to remove the shield!
  7. Detach the sensor electrical connector.
  8. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the block face. To install:
  9. Position the CKP sensor to the block face, then secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  10. Install the CKP sensor shield.
  11. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  12. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  13. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76°turn.
  14. Install the inner fender shield and the right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  15. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the serpentine belt.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT: Care must be taken when removing the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Use penetrating oil and allow to soak around the CKP
sensor before removing the sensor. Twist the sensor to break the O-ring seals loose. When removing the sensor, pull the sensor straight out of the
engine block at the same angle the sensor was installed. Failure to be careful may result in sensor damage.
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
2. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor harness connector at the CKP sensor.
3. Remove the fuel line bracket and retaining bolt.
4. Use penetrating oil and allow to soak around the CKP sensor before removing the sensor.
5. Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolt.
6. Prior to removal of the CKP sensor, rotate the sensor back and forth.
7. Remove the CKP sensor at the same angle at which the CKP sensor was installed.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT: Inspect the CKP sensor O-ring for wear or damage. If a problem is found, replace the O-ring. Lubricate the new O-ring with engine
oil before installing.
1. Install the CKP sensor at the same angle at which the CKP sensor was removed.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the CKP sensor retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
3. Connect the CKP sensor harness connector.
4. Install the fuel line bracket and retaining bolt.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. See: Testing and Inspection/Programming and Relearning

Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair
CKP System Variation Learn Procedure
IMPORTANT: For additional diagnostic information, refer to DTC P1336.
1. Install a scan tool.
2. With a scan tool, monitor the powertrain control module for DTCs. If other DTCs are set, except DTC P1336, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set.
3. Close the vehicle's hood.
4. With a scan tool, select the crankshaft position variation learn procedure.
5. Observe the fuel cut-off for the engine that you are performing the learn procedure on.
6. The scan tool instructs you to perform the following:
^ Apply the vehicles parking brake.
^ Block the drive wheels.
^ Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON.
^ Apply and hold the brake pedal.
^ Start and idle the engine.
^ Turn OFF the A/C.
^ Place the vehicle's transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
^ The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only
displays the condition that inhibits the procedure. The scan tool monitors the following components:
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensors activity - If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to DTC P0335 or DTC P0336.
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor activity- If there is a CMP sensor condition, refer to DTC P0341, DTC P0342 or DTC P0343.
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) - If the engine coolant temperature is not warm enough, idle the engine until the engine coolant
temperature reaches the correct temperature.
7. With the scan tool, enable the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure.
IMPORTANT: While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is
returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.
8. Slowly increase the engine speed to the RPM that you observed.
9. Immediately release the throttle when fuel cut-off is reached.
10. The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this ignition. If the scan tool does NOT display this message and no additional DTCs set, refer to
Symptoms - Engine Mechanical. If a DTC set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set.
11. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully.

Crankshaft Position Sensor Error P0335 recurred after r&r

In the kit there are two sensor that look identical. The one for the crankshaft has a white paint mark on it near the bolt hole. Make sure that it is in the right location.
