The brake light switch is an input to the BCM - body control module , do you know about BCM'S - electronic module ?
Stop Lamps
When the driver presses the brake pedal, the switch contacts open and battery positive voltage is interrupted to the BCM. The BCM then supplies voltage to both the turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuit and trailer rear turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuits. The BCM also supplies voltage to the CHMSL though a dedicated circuit.

could have DTC'S stored in the BCM
DTC B3445 00: Stop Lamp Circuit
Circuit/System Description
The stop lamp switch is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a B+ reference voltage to the stop lamp switch. When the stop lamp switch contacts close indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery voltage to stop lamp relay control circuit and the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). When the stop lamp relay receives battery voltage from the BCM, the relay coil is energized and the stop lamp relay switch contacts close applying battery voltage to the STOP LAMPS fuse to illuminate the left and right stop lamps.

DTC C0277 00: Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration Not Learned
DTC C0297 00: Brake Applied Output Circuit
DTC C0890 00: Device Voltage Reference Output 3 Circuit Voltage Out of Range

In the event that DTC C0277, C0297, or C0890 sets as current in the body control module (BCM) is an indication of a possible internal BCM malfunction or programming error. There are no external circuits available to diagnose on this vehicle with respect to these DTCs.
Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop or the Cadillac dealer.

Taillights are not working. Brakes lights and turn signals fine, but no taillights. Checked the fuse and it's okay. Any ideas?

Try unplugging the connector from the brake light switch( under the dash on the brake pedal arm) Install a jumper in the plug and see if the brake lights come on. If they do, the switch is bad. The new switch must be adjusted correctly or the brake lights will stay on all the time. This circuit has power even when key switch is off.

2006 Kia Amanti... the brake lights stay on

If the brake lights stay on even if the car is turned off (or even if it is on) the first thing I would be checking is the brake pedal switch under the dash. Brake lights are activated when the brake pedal is depressed and comes off the switch or the return spring is broken or stretched not allowing it to fully return when foot is taken off the brake pedal.

Brake light problem

Have you checked your brake fluid lately? If you're not low on fluid, I'd strongly suggest you take your car in for service, or to somebody who knows what they're doing. Don't sidestep brake problems.

1994 s10 blazer brake lights stay on even with the stop light swith unpluged

are you sure the brake light switch is unplugged on the brake pedal itself? follow thr brake pedal up,you will see a switch that has electrical plugin. it may just be of need of adjustment, see how it works? plunger type of switch! see it? sometimes the adjustment moves because the bolts,or nuts loosen themselves up. try adjusting the switch. or then if this does'nt help.replace the brake light switch itself.sounds like you know mechanics,if you need procedure of switch replacement, repost to fixya.com i would be happy to talk you through the entire replacement.there are more on this site that would be happy to assist also.thank you for choosing fixya.com we are always here 24/7

My brake lights stay on even when car is off and pedal is not depressed. I have a 1991 geo prism

It sounds like it may be a bad brake light switch. The switch is located under dash above brake pedal, usually mounted on the pedal shaft coming down from where it bolts into the pushrod going through firewall. Once you locate the switch, unplug the connectors and see if brake lights go out. If lights go out, then the swtich is bad.

BRAKE LIGHTS

It sounds like the brake light switch is stuck or broken.
If you look up under the dash, towards the top of the pedals, you'll see a switch that operates the brake lights, there should be 2 wires connected to it. unplug that switch, and see if the brake lights go out. If they do, replace the switch (I give it a 90% chance). If not, you could have a short somewhere in the electrical system.
Check the brake light switch first, and go from there.
