It seems that their is a bad connection on the alternator plug or somewhere along the wires an open small area is touching the body or shorting out to earth so to speak.Clean the contacts inside the alternator plug and thouroughly examine the wires to see if any of the plastic insulation or coating has maybe sheered or worn off from rubbing against some metal area that might be hot.A small exposed area will cause the present problem.Another possibility is that a relay may also be faulty That is if the alternator is wired through a relay as some cars are.The contacts in the relay will be dirty from arcing across the contact points in the relay, which will eventually burn away not making proper contact.I hope this will help you. Good luck.
