I own a Vito 110 and I have found it isn't particularly economical in and around town but it does very well on longer runs, even though there is a tendency to black exhaust smoke when it is working hard.
Black smoke is inevitable when a diesel engine is either getting too much fuel in the cylinders or the fuel is arriving in the wrong form. Excess fuel often causes a change in engine note - typically more knocking.
If there are no symptoms of the excess using of fuel, external leaks must be considered, checked for and eliminated. There is quite a lot of pipework not easy to examine and inspection should be thorough. In the absence of leaks and excess smoke it would be wise to calculate the actual fuel consumption.
Many people who are unsatisfied with their fuel consumption change their opinion after discovering the exact consumption, which is lower than expected in almost every case. If the actual consumption is disappointing and all external checks have proved negative there will be little else left but to delve into the engine condition and settings. If the engine has covered a decent mileage the injectors probably need servicing.
