The 1.6L (and others) size engines have an "Interference Engine". If the timing belt breaks, severe engine damage results in pistons crushing valves. The timing belt MUST be replaced at regular intervals as outlined in your manual. Did you replace the timing belt in time?
Has anyone checked the timing belt ? sounds to me like it might have striped or broke a timing belt. need to ckeck it for fire/fuel , there should be a cover you can remove to see if the belt has any damage.
I have a 1.5 CRDi which uses the Mercedes engine and has a cam chain not a belt Check the owners manual the chain doesnt need replacing on any of the service intervals it only requires checking and retentioning
The timing is electronic and non adjustable. If you change the belt and don't have it set up (positioned) exactly right , you will cause major engine damage.
Pistons will hit valves and bend them. Don't do your timing belt unless you are experienced at doing that job.
1st disconnect your battery
(Tools that I needed. 14mm socket for mounting bolts, 13 mm socket and a drop light. You need to jack up the front end pretty high both sides and put jack stands under each side. (extra precaution I put wood under the wheels because I don't like getting crushed. Slide under your car (bring a drop light) Look up and see your oil filter. Now look left and you will see the starter motor (oh yeah there is a pain in the as s bracket in the way) remove that bracket (14mm should be right) and then remove the bottom bolt of the starter (you may need a long socket extension here 8"?) The next set of bolts you have to get from up above that come from the other side. Get your light in there the one on the left side is easiest so get that last. The one on the right side will have a wiring harness running really close to it. Force your 14mm socket onto it with a 4 in extension. Back the bolt off till it spins a free but leave it in the hole. Remove the second one until you hear the unit fall. When putting the two bolts from the other side in, don't reef on them to get them super tight. Save your core so you can get some money back. Good repair manuel will cost 20 bucks, Haynes auto repair at your local auto parts store. good luck
yes, this is VERY IMPORTANT, this is an interference engine, meaning the valves and the piston cannot be in the same place at the same time,or it will bend the valves.then you are looking at a major repair job, think or it as insurance on your engine. please rate my fix as i strive to be the best, questions, get back to me
trywww.autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you
It's a korean piece of ****...when the timing belt breaks or slips, the engine just stops...only after it has bent a piston, rod, or blown a headgasket...all without warning.
