Sounds like a fuel issue. I would make sure you have at least 45lbs of fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If not, make sure the fuel pump runs. Chances are you will need to drop the fuel tank and change out the fuel pump.

This may be related to the antitheft system The system is known for turning off the starter and/or injectors when it fails. Is there a light on the dash that says SECURITY or a picture of a car with a lock through it? This is a common problem worth looking into. http://www.diy-gm-security.com/

It sounds like an electrical problem with the ignition possibly the electronic ignition module..You say it fired once with starter fluid ..
Pull #1 spark plug ground it to the block with the wire connected crank the engine see if it sparks and what color is the spark /Orange is bad blue is good ..
You may get no spark. In any case you have to start checking things like the cap / rotor /wires connections to every part in the electrical ignition system .
A lose wire or a bad ground or a broken wire to a plug in connector or corrosion on one of the contacts could cause this .
Their is no magic answer for problems like this you need to look at what you have do some smart tests and narrow down the problem .

1999 Cadillac Catera - 103,000 miles - cranks but no fire

Hello carol...from the symptons you describe more than likely it's the CPS (crankshaft position sensor.)
The CPS is a common problem on Cateras with these symptoms.
The sensor is a magnetic impulse type that sends a signal to the computer, the computer then triggers the fire signal. When the CPS gets weak, dirty or has low voltage the intermitten no starts occur. It will finally result in a no start at all...Please be aware that a lot of caddy dealers will and have overcharged customers for this common problem by ill advise and replaceing uneeded componets.
Good luck...i hope this helps and will fixya up.
