SOURCE: 1995 crown vic gear problems/gear shift wont lock
if the shifter is loose and sloppy feeling then the shift cable bracket has come loose under the dash at the steering wheel. remove the lower panel under the steering wheel so you can see under the dash then get flash light and look while jiggling the shifter. you should be able to see the cable and bracket. if the bracket is loose then tighten the bolts. note this bracket is at the steering colum.
SOURCE: Everytime I put my car i park it goes into reverse.
It sounds like you have a damaged shifter cable. It is an adjustable cable but if it is that far out of adjustment then it is probably damaged. Replace it.
SOURCE: Jerks going into 3rd Gear
You the beginnings of what is known as the reverse slam. If caught early enough it is fixable. However, most times a rebuilt valve body is in order. I do it for around $200. For the record any late 1992-2002 valve body will work, those are the type II. Type I won't work and is 1992-early 1992 years.
SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2
check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine

suggest that you check your transmission fluid post haste please. you may only need to add transmission fluid to your car. also,if you have to add the fluid, where did your fluid leak? check for leaks under your car when parked. you may need transmission fluid and filter change, suggest that you do this with new filter and add lucas transmission treatment to the fluid change also. you'll need to purchase this yourself, unless you have a mechanic in the family that can do it for you.if not i suggest you find a mechanic you trust, then tell him,or,her to add this to your tranny fluid change. also suggest while the mechanics there at the transmission to check the modulator valve on the transmission, and the vacum line that operates it. just a hint. thanks for choosing fixya.com
