I read all the comments and suggestions. My opinion it is the abs activate. Is any lights on ? Have vehicle scanned for codes. A transmission problem is a lot different from a pulsating brake pedal.

There are hard spots on the front rotors and an out of round brake drum. This happens when you apply the parking brake when the drums are hot. If the brake drums have enough material to allow them to be resurfaced, do that or get new ones...never just one but both. Same goes for the front rotors.

HI! I just replaced the brakes they think it might be the transmission

  • Lawrence Oravetz May 02, 2016

Transmission is not connected in any way to the brakes. make sure the brake rotors and drums were resurfaced or replace when you got the brakes done. Replacing the pads is only 1/2 the job

You need to have someone look at the brake pads and see if you need new pads and also check the rotors for the brakes and be sure they are not out of round from heat. As a rule if the pads are replaced the rotors will be turned or at least checked. Hope this helps.

Most probable cause if the braking action is moderate is warped disc rotors
the warped disc pushes the piston in and out and that is the sensation at the pedal
if it is under sever braking , it will be the action of the ABS loosing and making pressure to stop wheel skid
get a proper diagnosis from an accredited brake specialist shop
if the discs are warped but within machinable limits , that may fix it for a while , otherwise get quality discs

I just replaced all that. Now they are thinking transmission

  • Bill Boyd Apr 28, 2016

    easy enough to check
run the fault codes and if nothing shows up go to an accredited service shop that has experience on your make of vehicle
I would be looking at failing cv joints before a transmission as there is no connection between brakes pulsating an a transmission causing that pulsation
I suggest that transmission change is a rort because the shop has no idea were all the replacement parts new out of the box or second hand

I had a friend take it for a ride and he said it has a rough or hard downshift

  • Bill Boyd May 08, 2016

if that is the case then there is no connection between that and pulsating brakes which was your original statement
perhaps it is a miscommunication between what you describe and what is actually happening when slowing down
To eliminate any misunderstanding of the terminology used, take it to an accredited transmission specialist shop for a proper diagnosis by people who have experience on your make of vehicle and then take it to an accredited brake specialist shop for a diagnosis of the problem

That's your anti lock brake modulator mis functioning. You need a BMW dealer or a competent shop to look at it. It could be a simple as a defective wheel sensor to the control module.

Hello. What you are experiencing with the pulsating brakes and the brake pedal pushing back is the antilock brake system [ABS] working correctly. Joe

ABS brakes not working

If you can feel the pedal pulsating and the light turns on the Abs is doin its job. if you want a better stop you could try a brake pad upgrade to ceramic pads and for even more stoping power add an after market drilled and sloted rotors.

Anti lock brake system

If the light is not on it may not be the ABS that is pulsating on slow braking but it may be that your have warped brake rotors, even if the rotors were replaced with the pads the new ones may be warped already, we always check new rotors on a brake lathe before installing them because we have seen this happen many times
