Recommend you have the car scanned to pull the trouble code history. You'll want to know what the car thought was wrong to see if you can avoid same problem in the future. Many parts stores have a free scanning service (Autozone, Advance, etc.)
Maybe, your engine has electronically-controlled adjustable valves, one of the modules may be going out on you...but the only way to check that is to actually go to a Honda dealer because most indy shops do not have the equipment necessary to pinpoint which module.
the best thing is take that distributor out, exchange for other new one. make sure the new distributor is a right year for your car and model . good luck
Check the EGR valve. If this valve stays open all the time like it sounds like it is you will have all these problems you are talking about, also with the glowing of the intake would make even more since
