What is engine to firewall strap for?

The strap with 3 ends....connect it to the frame. You can strap the alternator to the block.

It usually goes to the mounting stud on the starter motor Or to a stud on the engine block to ground the electrical system

Check for a broken or bad ground strap from the engine to the firewall of the engine compartment. This may be causing the problem. Hope this helps

Bad chassis ground. Look for a braided strap running between engine and firewall (perhaps other chassis part like inner fender). It may be broken completely, frayed or badly corroded. Easy to replace and inexpensive.

The earth strap goes from any solid mount on the engine to any solid mount on the chassis. I dont know if this will help solve all of your problems but it certainly wont do any harm.

Joe s anwers is good and I can add a step to give greater access . Place car in nuetral with wheels at rear of car loosely blocked { 1 - 2 inches before tire hits front block } . Then acquire 2 ton Logistic strap { used by trucking / moving vans to strap items in place - hooks on each end with ractheting device to tighten up } Place car in Nuetral and Hook one end to front of motor eye / bracket for engine removal - Now hook other end to Radiator crossmember support { near washer bottle works } . Tighten rachet mechanism handle and watch engine get pulled forward allowing you 2 inches more of firewall access to get plugs out . Car must be in Nuetral for above -Then Caution Fully Block Wheels in case Strap lets go while working against firewall .

My '97 with the 5.9L gas engine does not. It's grounded from the battery to the frame and a ground strap ran from a bolt under the exhaust manifold on the passenger side(near the oil filter) to the frame

on some it goes from motor to firewall or motor to the frame.. you have to have a good eye for it is easily overlooked...good luck

this is true ! Usually the strap will run from either the ground post or sometimes the the top mount bolt , to the body . Look at the ground straps that run from the engine to the frame and engine to body . Chances ar one of these straps are broke . They are located from the bottom behind the engine near the firewall , and on the passenger side of the engine underneath . I had a 2004 venture that the interior and display lights went out , a control module in the dash that ran the display , daylights , and cooling fan went out ! traded it in soon after !!! Good advice !

There is a recall on the strap. take it to your dealership or gm mechanic
