Is it an aftermarket alarm/starting system? If so it may be burnt out. Without the right bosch relays to hold the locks down for 3 seconds the sytem will burn out trying to lock and unlock due to the air pump sytem. They might have also messed with the stock alarm system if you have it on your model which would compound the problem. If the car starts at all I would look at replacing the coil and coil wires as they are some of the biggest contributors to poorly running MB's. Then I would check the fuel pressure, maybe replace the fuel filter and check valve as they can keep fuel pressure low. After that might be a bad ignition switch which I doubt but anything is possible. If you also have an aftermarket radio it is tied into the stock alarm and that may not help your issues either. Hope I have given you a good place to start.

Hi thanks i have been checking the alarm and in the spare wheel well there is what looks like a central locking control module with both electric and vaccum connections , this unit is soaking due to the boot well being wet.It is also very hot the small motor underneath i suspect.
