Did this car come with this engine from the MFGR? The problem could be caused by a number of things; First, make sure fluid level is correct. It is always checked on level ground with the engine running.
Next, make sure the linkage is adjusted properly. (Run over anything lately?)
Make sure that there are no codes written from the Body Control Module. Many times, if a code is written, it will cause the "check engine" light to come on. If this is the case, it leads us to the last possibility, and that's a bad torque converter or the connections going to it. Good luck with this project...accordianman

Check the gearbox filter, it may require replacing.
Its inside the gearbox below , remove the (gearbox)sump and you will notice it.

Vehicle Speed Sensor or Variable Speed Sensor (located on the transaxle - closest to the drivers side front tire. it has a two pin connector)
